As a teacher, it is important to explain complex philosophical concepts in a way that is accessible to the layman. One such concept is the demarcation between the notion of the “Unity of Existence/Wahda tul Wajood” and “Polytheism/Shirk.” This demarcation can often be tenuous and requires careful examination to truly understand its implications.
Philosophers have put forth a prevailing view that the “unity of existence” represents an ultimate monism of God or Allah, but this view is unknowingly susceptible to reductionism. In other words, the concept inadvertently assigns a materialistic equivalence to God, suggesting that the entire cosmos is merely an extension of His essence. This inadvertently renders the argument for life as humanity’s test null and invalid.
To have a broader understanding, it is necessary for humans to acknowledge that God exists beyond the constraints of spatial-temporal enumeration, matter, and energy. The encompassing environment is not a direct embodiment of His essence, but rather a manifestation of His creative prowess. To better understand this, we can use an analogy of a game developer creating a video game. In this analogy, the characters within the game may hypothesize that the game environment is a direct embodiment of the developer, infused with the developer’s attributes. However, in reality, the game is simply a fragment of the developer’s creative output with limitations and no access to the multifaceted ventures that the developer initiates and maintains. Similarly, our world is a manifestation of God’s creative power, but it is not His essence itself.
It is essential to consider the omniscience and omnipotence of God, indicating that His creations are ingeniously refined to serve their designated purposes. Our surrounding world is optimally constructed for our empirical examination, providing us with a transitory timespan to substantiate and validate our worth under the given circumstances and situations. This suggests that our existence is not a mere random occurrence, but rather a purposeful test that can only be properly understood and appreciated within the parameters set by God.
In conclusion, while the concept of the unity of existence may be aesthetically compelling and appear profoundly philosophical, it is important to recognize the potential discrepancies and limitations that may exist within it. As a teacher, it is crucial to present these concepts in a clear and concise manner, allowing laymen to develop a thoughtful understanding of these complex philosophical ideas.
